BIJAPUR'S ANCIENT SERAIS cum BAZARS SERIES -

2. The Kumatagi Bazar/ Serai

The Kumatagi Bazar is located 20 Kilometres from Bijapur City on the (now) outskirts of the Kumatgi Village. It is located near a lake and the summer palaces, all built during the reign of Ibrahim Adil Shah - II. The bazar also falls on the Bijapur-Gulbarga route, as both cities were historically significant in mediaeval times. The Bazar, like other bazar complexes of Bijapur, must have acted as a serai too, for travellers to stay, who were traversing this route with their caravans, thus making it a Caravan Serai also. Interestingly, this 40 Shops long Bazar/ Serai happes to have a mosque and a temple within its complex and an entrance gate was also provided, showing that the establishment was walled.
